Children often respond quickly to chiropractic care and seem to prefer our natural approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Years ago, a pediatrician asked if I would adjust an infant patient of his. Because of the timing of the visit, I was able to go to his office and adjust the child with him and the baby’s mom in the same room. We have great relationships with pediatricians, and they have referred several infants to us because we ensure that pediatric chiropractic care is gentle and effective.

We’re proud to treat infants, toddlers and children at Greater Niles Chiropractic Health Center. Here are some of the questions we’re most frequently asked about our pediatrics practice:

Why would anyone have his or her infant or toddler adjusted?

Many spinal problems begin in newborns because they do a lot of tugging and pulling in the birth process. They don’t yet have the strength to hold their heads upright. Many times problems begin even before babies can turn over and walk, and, if left unchecked, they can face health problems later in life. Hence it’s helpful to check young infants and toddlers to see if they have problems in their spines.

Are you certified in treating infants or small children as well as treating them with the Activator Technique?

I do incorporate some mirror image techniques from CBP® and get wonderful results.

Can chiropractic help with colic and how?

Definitely. By allowing the baby’s nervous system to function more normally, many problems such as colic resolve quickly and easily. When there is pressure and tension on the spinal cord because of a traumatic birth process or subluxations in the spine, we alleviate the tension. The result? Happier and healthier babies.

How would you describe how adjustments feel to a baby?

With an infant, I typically have the mother hold the baby, as she lays comfortably on my adjusting table. I then can adjust the child, pain-free, with a hand-held instrument. In most cases, I have babies smile or sleep through the entire adjustment.

Do children have to go through the entire examination process, and do you charge differently for them?

We don’t routinely x-ray children under 10 years of age, unless there is trauma, apparent scoliosis, or severe postural changes. The examination process is very similar to an adult exam, taking into consideration the unique structural differences in a child versus an adult spine. Most insurance plans cover children as they do adults.

How often do children have to be adjusted?

Initially, they may need to be adjusted as often as adults, but they often taper off more quickly as they have more flexibility and fewer stresses than adults.
